Cultural Artifact Handout

This speech is designed for you to begin to teach us about a culture through one of its artifacts. You should consider this an informative speech. You may pick either your culture or a different culture for this topic. You can also pick an ancient culture.

You should think of your artifact as something that either is or will be in a museum dedicated to this culture. For example, if you go to a museum about Greek culture you will probably find Discobolos (The Discus Thrower) statue. That would be one example of a cultural artifact that could be presented. Try to be creative!

You will have 5 minutes for your speech. You should include at least two academic sources in your speech. These should be cited according to MLA format on your outline and shared with us orally (source and date) during your presentation. Please use the Mt. SAC Library databases for research as explained in class. For your visual aid please either bring in your artifact or a picture of your artifact (8x11 printout is fine).

Each student will give their speech on Wed 4/23. Since we have limited time to give speeches if you miss your day on your assigned week there will be no make-ups unless you are granted an exception per Communication Department Policy. If you have any questions about your assigned day please send me an email to dcantrell3@mtsac.edu asap.

This speech will be given a few times on speech day to small groups. You will not be presenting in front of the class.  At least once you will give the speech with your professor listening and grading your speech.

You can use up to 3 3x5 note cards during your presentation – no outlines can be used. A full and complete outline will be due the day of your speech.
