Impromptu Speech
Impromptu speeches require you to think on your feet and focus on the basic speech outline. While the content of your speech will not be known ahead of time you will know the framework for your speech. You will have up to 5 minutes to prepare for your speech.
This speech will be primarily graded on following the basic speech outline:
- You should have an introduction with your topic (quotation), thesis, and preview.
- You should then have 3 body points where you explain the meaning of the quotation. This is where you prove your thesis.
- You should then have a conclusion where you restate your thesis, recap your body points, and end with your quotation.
You have three minutes for your speech. You have a 30 second grace period on the time of your speech. After that, 5 percentage points will be deducted from your score for each 30-second interval (over or under) that is surpassed. For example, if a 95% speech runs 15 seconds over the grace period, the score will be reduced to a 90%, etc.
