Reaction Paper Prompt #1
Choose one of the following questions to answer for your paper.
Your paper needs to be: (1) typed, (2) 4-5 pages in length, (3) in 12 point font (times new roman/arial), (4) double spaced, and (5) include a reference page in MLA format. You do not need a title page. Please ask me for any clarification on the assignment before you turn in the paper. Once papers are turned in I will assume you fully understood the assignment.
For either prompt you should use the "Body Donation should be mandatory" debate as the basis for your analysis. If you have trouble watching the debate at home please visit the SSSC and watch it on the computers available there. While you are welcome to watch the entire debate, for our assignment you only need to watch the first 4 opening statements (first 30 minutes). You can view the debate online at the link above. 1. Fallacies
In lecture and in your textbook we have covered the concept of fallacies. Given what we’ve studied, (1) explain fallacies (including at least 3 specific fallacies most relevant to the debate), (2) analyze how well the Pro and Con did at avoiding fallacies (make sure to use specific examples) giving each side a grade from A-F, and (3) explain and justify who you think won the debate.
2. Toulmin Model
In lecture and in your textbook we have covered the concept of the Toulmin Model. Given what we’ve studied, (1) explain the Toulmin model (focus on the 3 main parts), (2) analyze how well the Pro and Con used the Toulmin model when making arguments (make sure to use specific examples) giving each side a grade from A-F, and (3) explain and justify who you think won the debate.
3. Inductive Reasoning
In lecture and in your textbook we have covered the concept of the inductive reasoning. Given what we’ve studied, (1) explain Inductive Reasoning (focus on 3 types most relevant to the debate), (2) analyze how well the Pro and Con used inductive reasoning when making arguments (make sure to use specific examples) giving each side a grade from A-F, and (3) explain and justify who you think won the debate.
The structure of your paper for either prompt should include:
- First, an introduction to your paper
- Second, explain the concept in sufficient detail including any related concepts.
- Third, a discussion of the performance of each team on your subject
- A paragraph on Pro including your grade A-F
- A paragraph on Con including your grade A-F
- Fourth, explain and justify who you think won the debate
- Fifth, a brief conclusion
- Sixth, a reference page in MLA format
