Impromptu speeches require you to think on your feet and focus on the basic speech outline. While the content of your speech will not be known ahead of time you will know the framework for your speech. You will have up to 5 minutes to prepare for your speech.
This speech will be primarily graded on following the basic speech outline:
- You should have an introduction with an attention getter, your topic (quotation), significance statement (if you agree or disagree), and preview.
- You should then have 3 body points where you explain the meaning of the quotation. This is where you prove your thesis. Use your examples from your homework #3 assignment.
- You should then have a conclusion where you restate your thesis, recap your body points, and end with your quotation.
ALL students should be prepared to give their impromptu speech on DAY 1. We will finish up to 15 speeches on Day 1 and the rest of the class will deliver their speeches on day 2. So if less than 15 people volunteer to go on the first day, I will randomly choose additional students. As such, all hw #3 assignments will be due on day 1.
You have three minutes for your speech. You have a 30 second grace period on the time of your speech. After that, 5 percentage points will be deducted from your score for each 30-second interval (over or under) that is surpassed. For example, if a 95% speech runs 15 seconds over the grace period, the score will be reduced to a 90%, etc.Sample List of Quotations
